Vaping basics
What are the different vaping styles?
There are two distinct vaping styles that you might hear people talking about. Learning which style of vaper you are will help you to select the right vaping equipment.
Mouth to lung vaping (MTL): this style is most common when people first switch to vaping, as it most closely replicates the action of smoking. MTL vaping is achieved by using less airflow on the atomiser and using your cheeks to draw the vapour into your mouth before taking it into your lungs.
Direct to lung vaping (DTL): this style is more common as people get used to vaping. DTL vaping is achieved by using more airflow (from large atomisers and wide drip tips) and using your lungs to inhale the vapour directly into the lungs.
What is in e-liquid?
E-liquid can also be known as e-juice, vape liquid, vape juice or coil sauce, and is the liquid that you put into your vaping device, which is heated by the coil to create vapour. It consists of just four ingredients: propylene glycol (PG), vegetable glycerine (VG), flavouring and nicotine. VG and PG are additives from the food industry that are typically used to sweeten or preserve food.
What is propylene glycol (PG)?
Propylene glycol is used to carry flavour in food products, as an ingredient in food colouring, and as an additive in certain medicines. PG is the ingredient that provides the throat hit sensation that new vapers crave. Propylene glycol is non-toxic and is proven to be safe for use by humans.
What is vegetable glycerine (VG)?
Vegetable glycerine is a sweet, vegetable-based liquid. VG provides the vapour production which simulates smoke, and is thicker than propylene glycol. Vegetable glycerine is non-toxic and is proven to be safe for use by humans. The more VG in an e-liquid, the smoother it will be to vape, and the bigger the cloud production will be.
What is sub-ohm vaping?
Sub-ohming is vaping on a device where the coil has a resistance of less than 1.0 ohm. The coil will contain a thicker wire with larger wicking holes to increase the airflow. You will be able to use more power, and the thicker wire means that more surface area is in contact with the e-liquid-soaked cotton.
The reason advanced vapers ‘sub-ohm’ is to be able to increase the power output from their devices, creating more vapour and flavour from their e-liquid.
Typically sub-ohm vapers favour the direct-to-lung (DTL) vaping style. When the vapour is inhaled straight into the lungs, it increases the amount of vapour they can take in each puff. They also choose high-VG e-liquids to increase vapour production even further.
Sub-ohm coils and tanks will only work on a mechanical or regulated mod or kit capable of handling them. Improper use can lead to damaged vaping kit, or injury to yourself and others. If in doubt, always check with us to make sure you have the correct kit for what you’re trying to achieve.
How do I prime a new coil?
To prime a new coil, simply fill your tank with e-liquid once the new coil is fitted and leave it to stand for a few minutes before vaping. This allows the cotton inside your new coil to absorb plenty of e-liquid, ready for that first, tasty vape.
What is the difference between ‘mouth to lung’ and ‘direct to lung’ vaping?
These terms have come about due to the new technology available in vaping devices, which are much more powerful than they used to be. If you are new to vaping, you will need to know the difference so you can make an informed choice about which may be best for you.
With mouth to lung (MTL/M2L), you inhale the vapour and collect it in your mouth before breathing it fully into your lungs. The atomisers used for this provide a tight draw and are what new vapers should start with first to wean off smoking.
The process closely mimics the effects of smoking, and is what early adopters of vaping will be used to, as the first e-cigarette kits only allowed for the MTL method. MTL setups usually require fewer power settings (wattage) and can handle higher nicotine and PG levels.
Direct to lung (DL) vaping is much closer to breathing normally. DL devices are newer, more advanced setups and their atomisers have a much looser draw that requires the use of your lungs directly to inhale.
Far more vapour is produced (cloud chasing), there is more flavour and the hit can be more intense and satisfying. Because of the bigger hit, it is important to choose a lower nicotine content (usually no more than 6mg). Users will also often favour a higher-VG liquid, which is much smoother, and a vape kit with airflow control.
Troubleshooting devices
My vape battery isn’t working
Try the following:
- Check if you’ve pressed the power button too often and turned it off. The majority of vape mods and batteries can be turned on and off by clicking the firing button a number of times in quick succession. Depending on the brand of battery, this may be 3, 5 or 6 times: check your user manual for details.
- Check if you need to charge it. If you think it should be charged, double check that you are using the correct charger for your battery. Your battery will give you a signal to let you know that a connection has been made and charging is in progress.
- Check for connection issues. The terminal between your battery and your tank needs to be clean. Use a cotton bud to clear away any dust particles and gunked-up vape juice.
My mod’s OLED screen says there’s no atomiser
Rotate your device whilst looking at the tank to see if it’s crooked. This is the most common reason for this message and is caused by the device being dropped, knocked, or transported in your pocket. If it is crooked, it may be repairable, or it may be time for a new tank.
If your tank has an adjustable 510 pin, make sure it’s adjusted to suit your mod. Check your coil to see if it’s loose, or has vape juice clogging the connection at the base.
Make sure your tank is not over-tightened on the mod. Clean the connecting terminals to make sure your atomiser is making contact with the mod.
I’m not getting any draw from my vaping device
Try the following:
- Make sure your battery is switched on and has enough charge.
- Check that you have e-liquid in your tank.
- Make sure that there is a clean connection between your coil and your vape battery.
If none of that worked: the odd coil can be a dud, even if it’s fresh out of the pack and properly primed. Sometimes the cotton can get too tightly wound within the coil, which means no airflow can get through to give you the draw you’re used to. Change the coil for a new one, and let us know about the faulty coil so that we can replace it for you.
I’m getting spitting and/or gurgling sounds when I vape
Try the following:
- Remove the mouthpiece or drip tip (if possible) and flick the device towards the floor (preferably outside or into some tissue) to remove any excess vape juice from the coil.
- Make sure that the tank is not overfilled or over-tightened to the vape battery.
- Take the tank apart and run it under warm water to clear out any excess juice, then thoroughly dry it with clean kitchen roll before putting your device back together. Make sure you remove the coil first, as this must not be rinsed.
I’m getting e-liquid leaking through the airflow
Try the following:
- Make sure it hasn’t been left in a hot place, causing the device to overheat and the e-liquid to thin.
- Make sure the coil is securely tightened and not cross-threaded.
- Check that any O-rings on the coil are in place (check a new coil to see how these might look).
- Examine how you’re vaping: if your device is designed for direct-to-lung vaping but you’re mouth-to-lung vaping, you may be causing the device to overheat.
- Check what e-liquid you’re using. If your coil is low resistance, it has bigger airflow holes, which are designed for use with higher-VG (thicker) vape juice. If your e-liquid contains too much PG (thinner), it can end up leaking out of the airflow.
- Increase your power setting to vaporise more juice per puff and prevent leakage from a flooded coil.
- Empty your tank before getting on a plane! If you’ve recently taken a flight, the change in air pressure will force your vape juice out of the tank.
I’m getting a dry hit or burnt taste when I vape
Try the following:
- Check if your coil needs replacing. Coils don’t last forever, and when they wear out they can deliver an unpleasant burnt taste. How often they need replacing depends on a number of factors.
- If you’ve recently replaced the coil, make sure you primed it properly.
- If you’ve recently primed the coil, make sure you’ve left enough time for the e-liquid to completely saturate the cotton wicking material before taking a hit.
- Check that your tank contains enough e-liquid to cover the airflow holes in the coil, to avoid the coil drying out.
I’m not getting enough flavour from my e-liquid
Try the following:
- Blow gently through the tank to get the liquid flowing and release flavour.
- Take a drink of water to flush your taste buds.
- Consider how old your e-liquid is: oxidation can degrade the flavour of vape juice over time.
- Clean your tank and connections to make sure no grubby build-up is affecting flavour delivery.
- Change to a different flavour for a while. If you’ve been vaping the same flavour for a while, you may be suffering from vaper’s tongue (also known as olfactory fatigue, vaper’s fatigue or flavour fatigue). Switching your flavours around periodically usually does the trick.
If none of that worked: do you currently have a cold? Our sense of taste is hugely affected by our sense of smell, so a cold can often be the culprit of things tasting bland or nasty. Stress, certain infections and/or medications can also lead to a temporary change or loss of taste.
E-liquid information
What e-liquid nicotine strength should I choose?
The nicotine strength you should choose depends on your previous smoking habits. For light smokers, 3mg to 6mg nicotine strength is ideal. Moderate smokers should consider 6mg to 12mg, while heavy smokers might prefer 12mg to 18mg or higher.
How should I store my e-liquids?
E-liquids should be stored in a cool, dark place away from direct sunlight and out of reach of children and pets. Keep the bottle tightly sealed to prevent air from affecting the flavour or quality.
Can I mix different e-liquid flavours?
Yes, you can mix e-liquid flavours to create your own unique blends. Just make sure you mix them in small quantities first to see if you like the combination before making larger batches. You’ll also want to make sure the e-liquids have the same VG/PG ratio, for example 50/50 with 50/50, or 70/30 with 70/30. You can find this information on the label on the bottle.
Are e-liquids safe to use?
E-liquids are generally considered safe when used as intended in vaping devices. However, they contain nicotine, which is an addictive substance, and should be handled and stored properly. Only purchase e-liquids from reputable sources, like us!
Vape hardware
What are vape mods and how do they work?
Vape mods are advanced vaping devices that let you adjust power settings like wattage and temperature to your preference. They work by heating the e-liquid in the atomiser through a coil, which produces vapour. Vape mods are generally sold separately unless you’re buying a vape kit, in which case they come with the tank and coils. Otherwise, mods do not come with tanks or coils.
How do I maintain my vape?
Regularly clean your tank, replace your coil as needed, and charge your device properly. Avoid letting your device overheat, and store it in a cool, dry place when not in use.
What is an atomiser?
An atomiser is the part of the vape that heats the e-liquid and turns it into vapour. It usually sits at the top of your vape and is what you draw on to inhale the vapour. It consists of a coil and a cotton wick that absorbs the liquid, which is then vaporised when the coil heats up.
What are the different types of vape coils?
The main types of vape coils include sub-ohm coils (for large clouds and direct-to-lung vaping), regular coils (for mouth-to-lung vaping), ceramic coils (for longer-lasting performance), and mesh coils (for enhanced flavour and even heating).
Product safety
Is vaping safe?
Vaping is considered less harmful than smoking but is not completely risk-free. It is important to purchase vape products from reputable vendors and to follow safety guidelines, particularly concerning battery use.
What safety features should I look for in a vaping device?
Look for devices with built-in protections like short-circuit protection, overcharge protection and overheating protection. Devices with temperature control settings also help prevent overheating.
What should I do if my vaping device overheats?
If your device overheats, stop using it immediately. Allow it to cool down before checking for any signs of damage. If it continues to overheat, consider replacing the battery or the device itself.
Laws and regulations
Is vaping legal in my country?
Vaping laws vary by country. Some countries have strict regulations or bans on vaping, while others have more relaxed laws. Always check the local laws regarding vaping before purchasing or using vape products.
What age do I have to be to buy vape products?
In most countries, you must be at least 18 years old to purchase vape products. Some regions may have a higher age requirement, such as 21. When you purchase through us, your age will be verified during the checkout stage. Read more about age verification.
Are there travel restrictions for vapes?
Many countries have restrictions on carrying vape devices and e-liquids on flights. Typically, you must pack them in your carry-on luggage and make sure e-liquids are within the allowed volume limit for liquids.
What are the legal limits for nicotine in e-liquids?
In regions like the European Union, e-liquids are limited to a maximum nicotine strength of 20mg/ml. Other countries may have different regulations, so it’s important to check your local laws.
